100# propane tanks $80.00 at Costco
My local store had these in stock last week. They are the same width as the 20# tanks but 5x taller. They are empty, of course.
These might be a good choice for renters or if you don't want to buy a larger tank and bury it. A couple of these in a garage or shed could add up to some serious cooking and heating capability if TSHTF. Only issue is they'll be a little hard to move around when full. A hand truck would be very helpful. |

They can NOT sell more than 100LBS at a time and 100 LB tanks MUST be transported standing up right in an open truck! Somthing else that I came across this year too :36_1_30:is that the OLD STILE heavy tanks with the old tank conection can NOT be REFILLED inless the old tanks are RECERTIFIED and a NED valve installed!! I bought two 30# and two 20# old style tanks last summer at garage sales and my propane dealer refused to fill them!:452: :realmad: The older propane tanks are much heavier and made from material about 4x as thick as the new tanks so it makes no sence:10_1_19: that they can NOT be refilled and finding a place that will change out the valve to the new stile and recertify is hard if not imposable!:thumb.aspx: I bought 9 NEW 30 # tanks this year  and it is a hastel only being able to get 3 filled at a time!! :36_1_25: the DUCK |

What I like to do is find the small barbeque size tanks for next to nothing at garage sales etc... Usually they are pretty old and beat up. Then I go trade them in at home depot for new, filled bottles.

No, I've traded bunches in this way. Some were really rotten looking. Maybe it's just the kid that was working there didn't know any better? I've gotten away with it so far.

Re: 100# propane tanks $80.00 at Costco
Yep, what TUMS said, I've gotten crappy tanks at yard sales and even a few with the BBQ sitting at the curb for trash pickup...in that case I check the tank, open the valve to vent any residual gas then cut the hose... leaving the POS BBQ...Then I trade them in.
While we are talking propane tanks...I have a very old 100# I had as a backup, it was about 1/2 full. I hooked it up and SOB!!! the shutoff valve leaked straight out the top. Use caution in buying and filling old tanks. Enjoy the rest of the weekend folks. |

btw re propane exchanges.
the last ones i got at home depot had a coupon[ they had to, required i believe by state[maybe lawsuit], as they had changed to a lb. less per tank due to costs. i think it was a 4lb fill. i had bought 3 , & only one coupon per household. |

I prefer the #20 BBQ tanks, easy to move around and easy (for me) to refill from my big bulk heating fuel tank.
Then I use them to refill my lantern bottles. +p |

Looking at purchasing another 1K gallon tank.
This is the first one I bought and another one will be a dupe to this one. |

Stock up on these things. If you fill them with water you can cut them open and use them to melt metal in.

Clean all the steel off it before you sell it. Then it wont be .10 cents a pound. Glass too. Hammers work great on cast.
